What is Optium Museum Acrylic?

Optium Museum Acrylic is Tru Vue’s premium acrylic glazing. It pairs an anti-reflective, UV-filtering finish with an acrylic sheet, so you get a near-invisible view of the art without the weight or breakage risk of glass. It blocks up to 99% of UV light, which makes it a conservation-grade option for originals.

Why choose acrylic over glass?

  • Size: large frames get heavy fast with glass. Acrylic is about half the weight, which makes big pieces easier and safer to hang.
  • Safety: it is shatter-resistant, so it suits hotel corridors, offices, children’s rooms and anywhere a frame could be knocked.
  • Shipping: artwork going overseas or across the GCC arrives safely, with no broken glass to damage the piece.
  • Anti-static: unlike ordinary acrylic, Optium does not build static, so it will not attract dust or pull loose pastel and charcoal off the paper.

Where it works best

We recommend Optium for large originals and photography, pastels and charcoals, framed textiles and jerseys in busy spaces, and contract projects for hotels and offices where safety rules favour acrylic. See our hotel & contract framing work for large-volume projects.

Caring for Optium Museum Acrylic

Acrylic is softer than glass, so treat it gently. Dust with a soft, clean microfibre cloth. If it needs a proper clean, use a cleaner made for acrylic, applied to the cloth rather than the surface. Avoid paper towels and any ammonia-based glass cleaner, which can scratch or cloud the surface.

Optium or Museum Glass?

Both give the same low-reflection, high-UV-protection result. Museum Glass is harder-wearing and slightly crisper; Optium wins on weight, safety and shipping. For decorative pieces, UltraVue UV70 is a lower-cost alternative. At our Safestway counter we can show you the difference side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Optium Museum Acrylic as clear as glass?

Its anti-reflective finish gives a view very close to Museum Glass. Most people cannot tell the difference once the piece is on the wall.

Does acrylic scratch easily?

Optium has an abrasion-resistant coating, so it is far tougher than ordinary acrylic, but it is still softer than glass. Clean it only with a microfibre cloth and an acrylic-safe cleaner.

Is Optium good for pastels and charcoal?

Yes. It is anti-static, so it will not pull loose pigment off the paper the way ordinary acrylic can.

Why is Optium used in hotels?

It is shatter-resistant and light, which makes it safer in public spaces and easier to install at scale, while still protecting the artwork from UV light.
